Hollywood actress Sarah Michelle Gellar says that both virtual learning and too much screen time has ruined her son’s eyesight. Here’s what she has to say.

Speaking to Today Parents, the actress admitted that due to the coronavirus pandemic, her 8-year-old son Rocky has been spending more time in front of a screen and as a result, he now has myopia. The actress, along with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., also have an 11-year-old daughter named Charlotte.

Sarah Michelle told the site, “I really chalked it up to screen fatigue because my kids didn’t have a lot of access to devices (before the coronavirus quarantine,). All of a sudden they’re thrown into this world where they’re on Zoom for school and the only way they can connect with their friends afterwards is to continue on these devices. It was not something my kids were used to.”

Sarah Michelle added that things got so bad that she ended up taking Rocky to an eye doctor. “They said not only did he have myopia — the common term is nearsightedness — but it was progressing extremely rapidly,” she said.

With that said, Sarah Michelle Gellar added that during normal times, she and Freddie are normally very strict about their children’s screen times. But with virtual learning forcing everyone to spend more time in front of a computer screen, there was just no way working around it these last few months. Still, both parents are doing whatever they can to keep their children busy and active.

“We’re pretty strict about screen time,” Gellar said. “During the school day screens are only for school, so there’s no television, there’s no texting friends, there’s no nothing. As soon as school’s out, we try to do physical activity outside as a family whether it’s hiking or taking a walk or biking or swimming. We’ve also gotten really into board games.”
