Who knew Queen Elizabeth was such a big soap opera fan? Apparently she is as Her Majesty was all smiles as she took a look inside the Rovers Return on her visit to the set of Coronation Street this past week. Here’s what you need to know.

The Queen was on hand to celebrate the long-running soap’s 60th year on the small screen.

On a 40-minute tour of the set and studios, Queen Elizabeth, wearing a teal Angela Kelly outfit with matching hat, met a host of cast and crew of the show, walking beside the cobbled street before popping into the studio where the interior of the Rovers Return is filmed.

“It’s marvellous that you’ve been able carry on during this pandemic,” the Queen said on meeting cast members including Barbara Knox who plays Rita Tanner, Sue Nicholls who plays Audrey Roberts, and Helen Worth who plays Gail Platt.

“Ma’am, you’re the one that’s carried on,” replied William Roache, who holds the record as the world’s longest-serving soap star having played the role of Ken Barlow since the first episode. Roache also told the Queen he had first seen her when she visited Jamaica in 1963, when he was serving as an officer with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

He added: “Thank you so much for coming today.”

The show’s 60th birthday was in December last year when England was locked down due to the pandemic, according to Buckingham Palace, so this was a delayed royal visit.

Meanwhile, Britain will also be celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, which will mark her 70th year on her throne next year.
