While there are still many parts of the world being ravaged by Covid-19, countless of individuals struggling to find work or keep their businesses afloat, and many lives torn apart because of the pandemic, the British Royal Family have something far more important to them to worry about. In fact, there’s a new report that suggests there’s going to be plenty of “royal heartbreak” behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace, as both Prince William and Prince George are set to miss out on a timeless and beloved royal tradition. Here’s what you need to know.

According to Britain’s Express, Prince William and his first-born son were supposed to take part in Balmorals’ annual Glorious Twelfth tradition, but will have to miss out on the hunt this year. That’s because experts believe the “frostier than normal” spring has killed off many young grouse, meaning the ceremony might be called off altogether.

Glorious Twelfth is held on August 12, and marks the start of the shooting season for red grouse in the UK. The date is traditional, and is enshrined in law under the Game Act of 1831.

Of course, it didn’t take very long for both royal fans and critics alike to weigh in on the matter. Many of them took to their social media accounts to write, “He lost his grandfather earlier in the year, yet not being able to blast some birds out of the sky is causing heartache?” along with, “So sad the little boy can’t join his anachronistic and bloodthirsty family in shooting defenceless birds for fun.”

Another critic wrote, “Not sure what the ‘sport’ is – these birds are reared by the game keepers, and are tame. so when they are released for the shooting parties, they actually do not try to run away or hide. Often they have to use dogs and beaters to get them to put on a token flight. At least Harry and Megan have bowed out of this slaughter!”
