Let’s just say that Prince Harry is not playing, especially when it comes to certain publications spreading misinformation about him, his wife Meghan Markle, and his family. There’s a new report that says the Duke of Sussex has just slapped a lawsuit on the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday for libel. Here’s what you need to know.

The Duke of Sussex launched the libel action against Associated Newspapers Limited in the High Court just this past week. However, it is not yet clear which of the group’s publications Harry is suing. A source said: “The Duke has filed a complaint against Associated Newspapers Limited.”

The insider declined to elaborate which newspaper title Harry had launched the lawsuit against and nor did they explain which story or article was the subject of the complaint.

Back in March of 2021, the Duchess of Sussex sued the Associated Papers after they published what should have been a private letter that was intended for her father, Thomas Markle Sr., and not the world. The High Court Judge Mark Warby ruled that the move invaded Meghan’s privacy and also ruled that the issue over the ownership of copyright should be examined at a limited trial.

A lawyer for The Mail on Sunday filed court documents stating they plan to appeal the judge’s ruling to the Court of Appeal as they feel they are entitled to a full trial. A determination will be made on whether they have a chance to appeal before it can proceed.

In his judgment, Lord Justice Warby found for Meghan in her claim for misuse of private information against the AN, Ltd, publishers of the Mail on Sunday and Mail Online, over five articles published in February 2019, which included extracts from the letter.

He said: “It was, in short, a personal and private letter. The majority of what was published was about the claimant’s own behavior, her feelings of anguish about her father’s behavior – as she saw it – and the resulting rift between them. These are inherently private and personal matters.”
