Prince Harry held his Invictus Games 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, as King Charles was only two miles away, hosting a garden party at Buckingham Palace.
The monarch stated he was “too busy” to see his youngest son during his visit to the UK. No royal family members attended Harry’s event for the sick, wounded, and injured soldiers.
Harry’s Relatives From Princess Diana’s Side Showed Up
The Duke of Sussex tried to remain upbeat despite senior members of his family not showing up for him. It’s almost sad to see the royal family so distant from Harry.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Queen Camilla, Prince Richard and Birgitte from Gloucester, and Princess Anne were with the King. The only working royals who were not at the Palace’s garden party were Prince William and Kate Middleton.
On a happier note, his mother, Princess Diana’s close relatives, including Harry’s uncle, Earl Spencer, brother of Princess Diana, and Lady Jane Fellowes, his Aunt, Princess Diana’s sister, were both in attendance for Harry’s big day.
Some others who showed up for Harry included Princess Diana’s nephew, Louis Spencer, the Prime Minister’s wife, Akshata Murty, and a former army officer, who mentored Harry and stepped in as a significant brother figure, was also in attendance. Hundreds of others were in the crowd, shouting, “We love you, Harry.”
Actor Damian Lewis recited the Invictus Games poem. Community members and supporters also provided readings in the Service, led by Reverand Andrew Tremlett, Dean of St. Paul’s.
Michelle Turner, the UK Invictus Games Team vice-captain, also gave a heart-rendering reading. She read a beautiful poem explaining how the Invictus Games helped her recovery and her family. After finishing her reading, she tearfully said, “Thank you, Invictus, for giving me my life back.”
Harry’s Favorite Invictus Games Memory
Harry talked about his favorite memory from the games between the US and the UK,
“It was that final game of USA vs. UK, and it was just end to end. I think it was wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball. And that, to me, was the highlight because you had 6,000 people who had filled this stadium and were on their feet, every age, from 5 to 95, and people were just literally blown away by what they were watching. We had no idea what was going to happen.”
He added,
“I think we’ve just had a huge amount of fun. I think that I personally have learned so much from the people I’ve met. The children, the family, the friends, and the individuals themselves. The amount of respect and admiration I have for all of them just continues to build year after year. And now we have these Invictus One Year to Go events as well because, to be honest with you, we can’t wait two years!”
Prince Harry will attend other Invictus Games events today. This trip to the UK was The Duke of Sussex’s first visit since he last saw his father briefly in February after Charles announced his shocking cancer diagnosis.
Say what you will about Harry, but the Invictus Games is a worthy event. It’s good to see he had support from his mother’s side.
