Oprah Winfrey is being slammed for using an unnamed weight loss drug to help her manage her weight. However, she has not divulged the name of the drug she is using.
Let’s get this straight right off the bat: Oprah is not a hypocrite for using a “weight loss drug” while she is a spokesperson on behalf of Weight Watchers™. She’s a hypocrite for making others feel ashamed for using it themselves by saying, “That’s the easy way out,” when she herself was using these drugs.
Be Mad at Oprah Winfrey for the Right Reasons
Oprah has been working with Weight Watchers to promote healthy, natural weight loss, which is why many people are upset.
However, she was probably using the drug as she was simultaneously claiming that she wanted to lose weight “the hard way.”
The former talk show host likely made others struggling with obesity feel ashamed if they were using the medication as a last-ditch effort to lose some weight.
The defense is not for celebrities and people who could quickly lose weight if they ate healthy and exercised. It is for those who have made a real, honest effort to do those things and failed.
While it is always better to do it the natural way, there are some people whose health is seriously on the line and who don’t lose a pound from making changes in their diet and exercise regimen.
Oprah was probably using these drugs when she made these comments, which is, by definition, hypocritical. She obviously felt desperate enough to turn to these drugs but didn’t admit it until now.
Oprah’s exact words were,
“Shouldn’t we all just be more accepting of whatever body you choose to be in? That should be your choice. Even when I first started hearing about the weight loss drugs, at the same time, I was going through knee surgery, and I felt ‘I’ve got to do this on my own.’ Because if I take the drug, that’s the easy way out.”
Oprah is Now Singing a Different Tune
What Oprah says now is totally different.
“I now use it as I feel I need it, as a tool to manage, not yo-yoing. The fact that there’s a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier in my lifetime feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift, and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for.”
Oprah added that she was “done with the shaming.” It’s lovely that she’s been able to lose over 40 pounds in recent months. She also lied to people and made them feel less than for doing precisely what she’s doing now.
A few of Oprah’s fans wonder if this is a strategic move on her part. Weight Watchers has just presented a newer, trendier option. The WW Clinic is a program where you can get telehealth weight loss management. They hook you up with a doctor who will prescribe you weight loss meds.
Some fans vehemently defended Oprah. One person said,
“People are angry at Oprah for utilizing weight loss assistance. It’s a very weird thing to be so wound up over what people do with their OWN bodies. Plus, folks are dying from preventable conditions. Can you blame anyone for getting the help they need to continue living?”
