NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers find that actress Chrishell Stause (Jordan Ridgeway) has recently hit back at Andy Cohen and some disparaging comments he made about the soap industry. Here’s what you need to know!
During the May 19th ABC special, The Story of Soaps, Andy Cohen had a case of foot-in-mouth when he said he believes that modern-day reality shows have replaced the soap industry and worse, have also rendered them obsolete. During the program, Andy said, “We’re voyeurs, but we also love stories. We want to be entertained, and I think that the ultimate expression of voyeurism is reality television. I know [Susan] Lucci doesn’t agree with me, but I think that the Housewives have replaced soap operas because the truth is stranger than fiction. Soaps became a kind of unnecessary because you could do it with real people, and they’re writing the drama themselves.”

Of course, it didn’t take long for many soap actors and journalists to drag Andy for his comments. Chrishell was one of the most high-profile and current soap actresses to call Andy out on his comments by tweeting, “I love @Andy &obviously have a deep love & respect for soaps. They’ve employed me for a very long time. But as someone that is also in the docusoap reality space with #SellingSunset with respect, I don’t think it will ever make soaps obsolete. Strongly disagree#TheStoryofSoaps.”
Soap Opera Digest journalist Carolyn Hinsey also added her on thoughts on the matter by saying, “Well #TheStoryofSoaps gave us a solid 90 minutes before taking a wrong turn with Andy Cohen bragging, “The Housewives have replaced soap operas.” Never! Good stories need heroes and Reality TV has none. But kudos @ABC for the fantastic walk down memory lane.”
Meanwhile, another soap fan put it this way, “Shameless promotion bc the Housewives franchise is a huge chunk of @Andy’s portfolio. He was invited to the party to celebrate the impact Soap Operas — not diminish sustainability due to a crappy decade of unnecessary cancellations. And not to promote reality tv.”
With that said, the soap industry has definitely spoken. And even though everyone has their differing opinions on the matter, that doesn’t mean we can’t be Real Housewives and soap fans at the same time, right? Both provide great television, with one being scripted and the other one not.
