Mischa Barton has revealed why she decided to leave the hit show The O.C after only the third season when things were looking very good for the actress.

The star, who had played Marissa, died at the end of season 3. Many fans, at the time, were overwhelmed by why this was happening. But now was the time for Mischa to come clean, albeit 15 years after she left. During an interview with E! News, she explained why she left it so long before giving fans an explanation.

She said: “I’ve always felt ashamed in a way to really talk about what went on behind the scenes because I’ve always been a very private person and very aware of people’s feelings.” And yet, she was still reluctant to pinpoint the exact reasons as to her departure. While that was the case, Mischa did acknowledge that things were not all well behind the scenes.

But rather than name specific individuals or events, she was a bit more withdrawn about it. She added: “We’re living in this era where we do speak out about our experiences. And women do come clean about what was really going on behind the scenes and how they were treated, [but] It’s a bit complicated.” This was complicated for several reasons.

First of all, Mischa always had the desire to make it in the Hollywood industry. So when she started to blow up on the show, directors started to become very interested in casting her into some of the biggest movies around.  Although she was welcoming those very offers, she was very candid about having to turn them down over fear that she could not deal with the media attention.

She continued: “Just dealing with the amount of invasion I was having in my personal life, I just felt very unprotected. It just felt like it was the best thing for me [to turn down the movies] and my health.” Since those moments, Mischa is in a better place. While her movie career has not taken off like she would have liked, there is still a lot of time on her side.
