Meghan Markle was recently ridiculed for comparing herself to the Obamas while explaining her first-look deal with Netflix at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit last week.
Meghan Spoke With Variety Editor In Chief, Alyson Shontell
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle scored a highly lucrative 100-million-dollar contract with Netflix in September 2020 after they fled the UK and left the royal family behind to come to the US.
The Sussexes set out to prove themselves, but only demonstrated that they are a one-hit wonder, as their only successful series was “Harry and Meghan.”
“Harry and Meghan” was the documentary the Duke and Duchess made for Netflix, and it was the only one to draw ratings.
Every other project they have produced has been a major dud. Although the first season of Meghan’s lifestyle series, “With Love, Meghan,” sparked curiosity, which made people tune in.
By the time the second season was released, no one cared anymore. At the summit, Meghan spewed word salad as she compared her Netflix partnership to the Obamas’ deal with their firm, Higher Ground. She doesn’t understand the concept of a first-look deal.
Critics on social media called her “Duchess Delulu” after she suggested that her and Harry’s deal is in any way similar to the Obamas’ deal.
One critic quipped,
“Comparing Archewell to the Obamas’ Higher Ground is like comparing a school play to a Spielberg production. One created award-winning documentaries, the other created a word salad about finding inspiration in….themselves.”
Meghan spoke with Variety editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell. The summit was called “Next Level Influence: A Conversation with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.”
The Duchess Knew How To Change The Subject When She Didn’t Want To Answer A Question
Meghan claims that the new deal is better for her and Harry because it allows her to pursue other avenues if a project isn’t a good fit for Netflix.
The truth about the first-look deal is that Netflix has the power to say yes or no to a project before anyone else. The new deal is a significant downgrade. Netflix buys pretty much anything, and if Netflix doesn’t buy it, it’s not going anywhere.
When asked whether “With Love, Meghan” would return for a third season, she was very evasive, dancing around the question and refusing to give a clear answer.
However, she said she has a holiday special coming out in November. Reading between the lines, Harry and Meghan made their initial fortune by trashing the royal family.
That was really all the docuseries Harry & Meghan was: trashing everything royal. Meghan really knows how to pretend she’s a success and change the subject, which she did constantly during the interview.
When asked about her lifestyle brand, As Ever, her response was underwhelming to say the least:
“My intention with As Ever was to get back to things that are tactile, how we connect with each other, how we connect with each other. And you can only convey so much of that, obviously, in videos and e-commerce.”
Meghan Feigns Humility And Success
Meghan acted like she’s a massive success, yet her brand has barely gotten off the ground. The Duchess has the resources to succeed, but she’s floundering because she doesn’t want to listen to her advisors.
Meghan talks about the “ability to pivot” as the key to her success. Yet she made huge mistakes, neglected to seek approval from the US Patent and Trademark Office, and was forced to change the name on day one.
The original name of her business was American Riviera Orchard. Then it was changed to “As Ever” at the last minute.
The more she spoke, the clearer it became that she knew nothing about business. Meghan’s faux humility was evident throughout the interview.
Basically, Meghan talked a lot but said nothing. She was at a Fortune event and sounded totally inept as a businesswoman.
She tried to spin gold from a string of dismal failures. Meghan comparing her and her husband to the Obamas is laughable.
