Meghan Markle will return to acting for the first time since her stint in the royal family. She’s set to play a starring role in the new romantic comedy, Close Personal Friends.
Meghan Stopped Acting Once She Became Engaged To Prince Harry
The film’s script is about two couples: one is famous, the other is not. She will play alongside Brie Larson, Jack Quaid, Lily Collins, and Henry Golding.
The Duchess of Sussex had walked away from her acting career in 2017 after her breakout role in the legal soap, “Suits,” where she played lawyer Rachel Zane.
She once wrote in her blog, “The Tig,” about how her role in Suits changed her life.” She gushed,
“I remember that day like it was yesterday. My cheeks still hurt from how hard I smiled.”
Meghan struggled to gain acting roles early in her career. The Duchess was also a “briefcase girl,” one of the models who held suitcases filled with cash on the game show, Deal or No Deal. Meghan also had minor roles in films such as Horrible Bosses, Get Him to the Greek, A Lot Like Love, and Remember Me. She also had a bit part on the daytime soap, General Hospital, where she played Nurse Jill. GH was actually her first professional acting role, which opened the door to other opportunities.
However, she stopped acting after becoming engaged to Prince Harry and later moved to the UK to become a working royal.
Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals in January 2020 and eventually moved to their current home in Montecito, California, with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet.
Harry And Meghan Have Been Struggling To Find Success
A source close to the production of her new film claimed,
“Meghan has been swamped with offers for acting work, and this one felt right.”
The insider added,
“The gig is with the full support of her husband, because he knows acting brings her joy.”
An LA insider told the Daily Mail,
“Executives in Hollywood have been urging her to return to acting”,
Given her success in Suits, and the failure of some of her projects since she left the business and married Harry in May 2018.
Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry was the reason why her acting career never really flourished. Her impending new life prompted the writer of “Suits,” Aaron Korsh, to plan to write Meghan’s character, Rachel, out of the show at the end of the 2017 season.
Meghan’s new gig may be yet another Sussex PR move, part of a larger relaunch. The only project that was successful for Harry and Meghan was their first Netflix docuseries, in which they capitalized on the royal family for fortune and fame.
Meghan has also struggled with turning her lifestyle brand, As Ever, into a success. Critics have slammed her for her awkward product range. Plus, the second season of her Netflix show, “With Love Meghan,” has also failed miserably.
A source related to the production of Close Personal Friends said,
“This is a massive moment for Meghan, and signifies a return to doing what she truly loves. It’s Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set.”
