Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith says that Meghan Markle has much in common with Wallis Simpson, a narcissistic control freak with a weak husband. Smith’s latest book examines the royal family’s history and how George VI “saved the monarchy.”
The Duke of Windsor Abdicated the Throne To Marry Wallis
There are apparent parallels connecting the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, specifically Prince Edward and his wife Wallis Simpson, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex or Prince Harry and his wife Meghan.
The Duke of Windsor abdicated the throne to marry Wallis in 1936, and his younger brother, George VI, became King. The rift between the two brothers started there, as Edward’s little brother, who was technically the spare, had to step up.
The similarities between the two couples are eerie. While Harry was never meant to be King, he and his brother, Prince William, have been estranged since Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal duties in January 2020.
William feels betrayed by his brother for his Oprah interview with Meghan and his tell-all book, “Spare.” Harry recounted an altercation between him and William in his book that turned physical. The fight was about Meghan.
Edward’s reign only lasted for about eleven months. Edward was never even crowned. He abdicated to marry a socialite and a notoriously difficult woman, much like Meghan.
In both scenarios, a spoiled American woman came between the brothers, changing everything. Queen Elizabeth intensely disliked Wallis because of her role in her brother George taking the throne, which she believed contributed to his early death.
Meghan and Wallis shared many of the same qualities. “Very narcissistic, very controlling, very dominating,” explains Smith.
Wallis Simpson and Meghan Markle Both Nearly Destroyed the British Monarchy
Wallis’s desire to wear a crown almost brought down the British monarchy. Some would say she set out to be the King’s mistress. Edward never fawned over a woman the way he did Wallis.
He would buckle Wallis’s shoes, fetch her nail file anytime she broke one of her well-manicured talons, and generally make a fool of himself.
Wallis was ambitious to become Queen, but the royal family did not allow a divorcee to wear the crown. So Edward abdicated.
Meghan Markle, also an American divorcee, has Harry wrapped around her finger. Harry left the royal family to protect his wife from the British tabloids, and they moved to California.
Harry and Meghan have badly damaged the royal family due to their behavior. Edward “threw the monarchy into turmoil over his obsession with Wallis Simpson,” Smith said. “But the abdication delivered Britain from an irresponsible King,” Smith declared. After his brother disgraced it, George worked hard to live up to the throne.
While the stories aren’t exactly the same, there are similarities. Queen Elizabeth’s husband, Prince Philip, would refer to Meghan as “The Duchess of Windsor,” a major burn, implying she was as controversial and self-serving as Wallis Simpson.
The scandals created by Harry and Meghan, as well as Edward and Wallis, are very similar. Love makes people do crazy things, and the royals are no different from every other fool who falls in love.
