Matthew Perry was supposed to play a part in “Don’t Look Up,” but he left the cast after experiencing a health scare. According to a Tuesday excerpt from the actor’s memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” the actor’s heart stopped while he was having surgery and didn’t restart for five minutes.

Despite having filmed a scene with Jonah Hill as a Republican journalist, the 53-year-old “Friends” alum claimed that he did not go back to the set. Instead, Perry stayed at a Swiss rehab facility.

After experiencing a five-minute heart attack during surgery, Matthew Perry canceled his appearance in “Don’t Look Up.” Perry explained that he had lied to his doctors about having severe stomach pain in order to obtain a prescription for hydrocodone and that he was having surgery to have a “weird medical device” implanted in his back.

The opioid that the “Odd Couple” star had taken the night before was combined with the anesthetic propofol used during the procedure. Perry said, “I didn’t flatline — but nothing had been beating. I was told that some beefy Swiss guy really didn’t want the guy from ‘Friends’ dying on his table and did CPR on me for the full five minutes, beating and pounding my chest.”

The movie, which was released in December 2021 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, did not include the one scene in which the Emmy nominee appeared. Prior to the publication of his book on November 1, Perry has been open about his struggles with addiction. On Sunday, Perry told the New York Times that he believes he has spent $9 million on his sobriety journey.

What do you think? Can you believe that his heart stopped for that long and would you have liked the film better had Matthew Perry been in it? Let us know in the comments below.
