Lisa Rinna has opened up about the circumstances surrounding her father, Frank Rinna’s, death in 2016, revealing that he chose to end his life through assisted suicide after enduring significant suffering.
In a recent episode of her podcast, “Let’s Not Talk About the Husband,” the former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star shared the poignant details with her husband, Harry Hamlin. Rinna, 61, explained that her father had been battling recurring pneumonia and had reached a point where he was determined to end his life.
Rinna described the situation as “surreal,” acknowledging the complex emotions involved in wanting to “support” her father’s decision while simultaneously facing the reality of witnessing his death. “When they set their mind to this, they’re ready… But, you’re going to watch your parent kill themselves, basically,” she told Hamlin, 73.

She emphasized the finality of her father’s choice, stating, “He was in pain and he was really unhappy.” Rinna also clarified that the process required the individual to self-administer the medication, explaining, “You can’t administer it to somebody. It has to be a willful act on their part.”
Rinna recounted her father’s impatience with the delayed arrival of the medication, and how she ensured a peaceful environment for his final moments. “The light was coming in, it was, like, 2 o’clock in the afternoon, so there’s a lot of real beauty behind it,” she shared.
According to Rinna, the process took approximately 45 minutes, and she described it as “very peaceful,” noting, “They just go to sleep, by the way, so it’s not anything gruesome.” Despite the peaceful nature of his passing, Rinna expressed the emotional weight of the experience, telling Hamlin, “It didn’t feel awful, but it felt awful.”
Rinna’s mother, Lois Rinna, passed away a few years after her father, from a stroke. Rinna’s daughter, Amelia Gray Hamlin, also shared heartfelt tributes to her grandmother on social media.
