Kendrick Lamar has closed Glastonbury 2022 in a dramatic headline set which ended with him chanting “Godspeed for women’s rights” before exiting the Pyramid Stage. The rapper worked through an array of songs from his back catalog accompanied by choreographed dancers. Here’s what you need to know.

At the end of the performance, lights came up during his rendition of new song Savior to reveal fake blood was pouring down his face from a crown of thorns. The words “Your Saviour I Am Not” blazed on the screens behind him as he performed the track with fake blood continually pouring down his face and white shirt. As his dancers encircled him, the music stopped leaving Lamar’s lone voice chanting “They judge you, they judge Christ. Godspeed for women’s rights” before he left the stage.

The plea for female rights appeared in protest against the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to end the country’s constitutional right to abortion.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a landmark ruling which established a nationwide right to safe and legal abortion. It is now believed 26 states are either certain or likely to make moves to ban abortion outright, with clinics in some states having already stopped performing terminations on Friday after the decision.

“This landmark case protected woman’s right to choose, her right to make intensely personal decisions with her doctor, free from the interference of politics,” he said from the White House.

Biden added that without the protection of Roe, “the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.” The president blamed his predecessor Donald Trump for the court’s decision, since Trump appointed the three justices who made the decision possible.

However, Trump took credit for the ruling himself, calling it “the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation,” in a statement. The former president said the ruling “was only made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.”
