Snoop Dogg is having a pretty awesome week. Not only is his latest album, B.O.D.R. dropping on Friday, but he will be part of what promises to be a history-making Super Bowl Half Time Show this Sunday. If that wasn’t enough, he has now been named the new owner of the very music label that launched his illustrious career.
The rapper/long-time pal of Martha Stewart acquired Death Row Records on Wednesday from MNRK Music Group.
The details of the deal have not been released, so we don’t know how much the Doggfather paid to acquire the label that signed him some 30 years ago.
Snoop Dogg Is New Owner Of Death Row Records 30 Years After He Made It Big With The Same Company
Death Row Records was founded in 1992 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey in the immediate aftermath of N.W.A.’s breakup. While Death Row Records saw huge successes with Snoop, Dr. Dre, and, of course, Tupac Shakur’s mammoth music careers, the label was often embroiled in mammoth amounts of trouble.
Co-founder Suge Knight was usually at the center of the contention, driving the car in which Shakur was fatally shot after the pair attacked gang rival, Orlando Anderson. He was also well known to employ intimidation tactics and violence in his business dealings and is the prime suspect in orchestrating the murder of the Notorious B.I.G.
Shortly after Shakur’s death, both Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg left Death Row Records. Rapidly, the label declined until it filed for bankruptcy in 2006.
Snoop Dogg said he’s excited about acquiring the label’s brand and he no longer needs to be concerned with any Suge Knight meddling- the ex-music exec is currently serving 28 years in prison for manslaughter
“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value,” the 50-year-old said in a statement. “It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.”
Congrats Snoop, we look forward to seeing what you do with the label- almost as much as we are looking forward to seeing Snoop, Dr. Dre, Mary J Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem tear up the Half Time Show during this Sunday’s Super Bowl, airing on NBC.
