Kanye West’s recent sell-out concert alongside Drake in remembrance of Larry Hoover, who is serving a life sentence, has been slammed.
Kanye West’s Concert With Drake To Highlight Gang Member Larry Hoover’s Life Sentence Has Been Criticised
That is the opinion of one federal enforcement officer, who is connected to the case. Kanye and Drake held the concert in order to highlight the need for prison and sentencing reform.
Although the anticipation for the show was building, one unnamed person questioned whether this was the right thing to do.
The source told TMZ the following: “Prosecutors are ‘surprised’ to see Drizzy and Ye throwing so much support behind the #FreeLarryHoover movement, considering the facts of his case.”
On reflection, this is something that needs further investigation. Accordingly, Larry was convicted of murder and given a life sentence in 1973.
Although he did not allegedly pull the trigger, it is claimed that he had given instructions for the shooting of the deceased, with suggestions that the deceased had stolen something from a member of Larry’ gang.
As such, regardless of the fact that Kanye was expressing a need for prison and sentencing reform, the source could not understand why the rapper would get involved in this as the crime has been punished.
However, those who are championing Larry’s cause point to the fact that the sentence was too harsh. It is stated that Larry began serving 6 life sentences in 1997.
But given that he did not actually pull the trigger, many felt this was too disproportionate to the charges that were being claimed against him. After all, Larry’s supporters argue that his crimes were as not as serious as pulling the trigger itself.
This concert has been very divisive, as music executive J Prince actually welcomed the show. He felt that Kanye would go onto save lives by raising awareness over the need for reforming the prison system.
In a prior interview, he remarked: “I let him [Drake] know that this is a moment and movement that can save lives. I believe by Drake and Kanye being an example, as two of hip-hop’s top artists, that lives would be saved.”
