John Mellencamp has blasted US politicians over their response to gun control in the aftermath of the Texas school shooting massacre at Robb Elementary.
John Mellencamp SLAMS US Approach To Gun Control-‘They Don’t Give A F— About Our Children’
The tragedy killed 19 children and two adults at the hands of the defendant Salvador Ramos. And in the aftermath of that event, United States President Joe Biden urged people to come together in order to look at imposing some form of gun control.
As of now, there is a bill being considered entitled the ‘Bipartisan Gun Bill.’ The Senate has initially voted in favour of it, which would have the impact of introducing more background checks on gun ownership for those under 21.
And yet, John is still not convinced by the measures. In his comments, he said: “Only in America, and I mean only, in America, can 21 people be murdered and a week later be buried and forgotten, with a flimsy little thumbnail, a vague notion of some sort of gun control law laying on the senator’s desks.”
However, it is important to bear in mind that gun control reform has always been a divisive issue. After all, proponents of the Second Amendment focus on the fact that it is a way to provide citizens with protection against unconstitutional acts.
However, John could not reconcile being pro-life in other areas, but then have an ambivalent attitude towards gun control. His following comments confirmed as much: “What kind of people are we who claim that we care about pro-life?
“Just so you know, anyone that’s reading this … politicians don’t give a f— about you, they don’t give a f— about me, and they don’t give a f— about our children.”
The only thing left to do is see whether the legislation does end up coming into law, and if it does, then it is only possible to comment on its effectiveness. Time will tell how it all plays out.
