There’s been a lot of interesting people on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, but one that surprised me the most was Jewel. I went into the episode thinking about how I’d hear her talk about her life as a young singer and how her life exploded when she saw success.

However, what I heard was mind-boggling and made me reevaluate what I had thought about the singer. She spoke about her early life growing up on an Alaskan homestead, but perhaps the most interesting was how it was passed down in her family, and how amazing her grandfather was.

Apparently, her grandfather left Europe before World War II began, sensing that Europe was about to crash and descend into chaos. He made his way to Alaska where he was given land on the territory and searched for the right spot to call home. She explained that she has photos of him traversing the ice and snow using a ladder to cross giant crevices. Once he settled, he was joined later by his new wife, and began their family, having 8 kids.

Jewel grew up on the homestead with several brothers, being the only girl. They would hunt, grow their own crops and get water by going down to the river. She also went into how important it was to have a connection to the food they ate and know how heavy water can be. Nowadays, we take all of this for granted, and during the pandemic, we saw a brief glimpse of madness when store shelves went empty.

After growing up on this homestead, she left home at 16 and was homeless. She goes into great detail about this and when she realized how to pull herself up and make a life for herself.

It was an incredible podcast and one you should definitely check out. Head over to Spotify to listen to the episode for free.
