Joe Manganiello‘s journey to sobriety likely contributed to the dissolution of his marriage to Sofia Vergara. A close source explained the substantial “impact” their divergent lifestyles had on their relationship.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, an insider disclosed that Joe, aged 46, who has been sober for 21 years and has openly shared his past battles with alcohol addiction, had been cautioned about entering a committed relationship with someone who was not actively pursuing sobriety.

“He was warned about this when he started dating her and again before marrying her. He did not think that he was going to change her but he also didn’t think about the implications this could have on their marriage.”

Manganiello and Vergara have officially announced their separation after seven years of marriage. In their joint statement, they acknowledged the challenging decision to divorce while emphasizing their continued love and care for one another.

A reliable source close to the former couple emphasized that Sofia, who occasionally shares images of herself consuming alcohol on her social media platforms, had always been extremely supportive of her estranged husband’s commitment to sobriety.

Nonetheless, experts have now expressed to DailyMail.com that relationships between a sober individual and someone who still drinks are often unsuccessful, regardless of the level of support provided by the latter.

During a 2019 interview, the actor spoke openly about his journey to sobriety, revealing that he used alcohol as a way to avoid confronting his issues. He candidly admitted that he had reached a point of feeling irreparably broken.

Although Joe has successfully maintained his sobriety for over twenty years, an addiction expert highlighted to DailyMail.com that alcohol can always serve as a potential trigger for individuals in recovery. This can present significant challenges within a marriage when one spouse continues to consume alcohol.
