Netflix blew our minds during the pandemic when they released the Tiger King series. We were hooked and just couldn’t get enough of it. Now it looks like the new Peacock series will be the next best thing. This series is based on the podcast “Over My Dead Body”. This show stars John Cameron Mitchell, Kate McKinnon, Kyle MacLachlan. It is all about the feud that occurred between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.
Joe Vs. Carole: The Scoop
McKinnon, who we have seen on Saturday Night Live, plays Carole and MacLachlan plays her husband, Howard. We haven’t seen Mitchell in a mainstream role and his fans are very excited for this one. He is known for being the creator of cult classics such as “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. He plays Joe Exotic, the very flamboyant zoo owner. Mitchell compared playing Exotic to a Shakespearan classic. He told fans, “It was really a hoot to play an antihero that some people hold up as a kind of icon and others see as an animal-hurting attempted murderer- and in between those things is the real person.”
Joe Vs. Carole: The Fictional Story of the Tiger King
Mitchell was dedicated to getting this role, so much so that he sent in a taped audition. This is the first time that he has done this in 27 years! The last project that he worked on was with Glenn Close and Patti LuPone and it was a podcast about a gay artist who launches a tumor telethon. It is called Anthem: Homonculus. He was ready to do something completely different than Hedwig and the podcast and this just spoke to him in so many ways.
He feels that Hedwig and Exotic are similar in many ways. “Their queerness and their femininity is not welcome, and they had to forge their way. Hedwig does what most creative queer people do, which is get out of town. Joe decided to stay and fight it out. He created his own kingdom within the hostile environment, because he liked being a country boy. He made it into drag. He imitated his oppressor, in a way, and was just as much a showman as Hedwig- and just as bitter and just as angry.”
This show will put a whole new spin on the relationship between Carole and Joe and fans of the Tiger Kind series are very excited to see what it has to offer. You can catch Joe Vs. Carole on the new Peacock streaming service.
