Prince William and Kate Middleton’s monarchy will look “radically different” from King Charles’s reign and anything that has come before.
William Will Prioritize Family Over the Monarchy and Focus on Fewer, More Impactful Projects
Royal author for the Daily Mail, Rebecca English, commented,
“Want to know what really pushes William’s buttons? It’s the suggestion, ‘Well, we’ve always done it this way.”
While the Prince of Wales
“very much believes in the tradition and the magic of the monarchy.”
However, William is itching to make some very big changes.
William will always put family first. He’s going to prioritize his family over the monarchy. William will scale back the amount of work and take on fewer, more impactful projects rather than traditional patronages.
The royal couple has made it clear that they aim to give their children a “normal life” while balancing the pressures of their royal duties.
William is also expected to eliminate archaic traditions. For example, reports have indicated that he won’t force the nation to pledge allegiance.
William will reduce the pomp and ceremony. It’s unclear at this point whether many of the same traditions will be followed. He wants to run a more relatable institution rather than a formal, distant monarchy.
Both William and Kate will focus on developing greater personal relationships with the public and are expected to emphasize compassion and use their leadership to foster mental health and community support.
Prince William and Princess Catherine Will Rule with Empathy-Driven Leadership
Royal journalist Russell Myers recently told Vanity Fair,
“What many people don’t realize, even for us who follow the royals closely, is what an integral part of the institution Catherine is.”
He added,
“I find it fascinating how much William relies on Catherine. Both professionally, personally, and emotionally.”
Apparently, Kate was the stronger, more stable person during her battle with cancer. It was incredibly daunting for William, whose father, King Charles, was also diagnosed with cancer around the same time.
Myers explained,
“He felt like he was hit by a bus. His mind was filled with doubts about his father’s condition, then his wife’s, and of course, how they would break the news to their three young children.”
Thankfully, Kate announced in January 2025 that she was in remission. William and Kate are also expected to approach their future roles as King and Queen with empathy-driven leadership.
Kate will also, of course, prioritize work that is close to her heart, namely her work through the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood.
Meanwhile, William is dedicated to his “Homewards” project, which aims to end homelessness. He wants to honor what his late mother, Princess Diana, instilled in him: a deep sense of compassion and responsibility for the homeless and marginalized.
William’s Vision for the Monarchy Mirrors Princess Diana’s Compassion and Positivity
The Prince of Wales launched his Homewards project in June 2023, aiming to make homelessness
“a rare, brief, and unrepeated experience.”
He renovates vacant properties to create new buildings and independent-living homes. He focuses on initiatives across Britain to help people experiencing homelessness and support low-income families.
In December 2009, Prince William slept out on the streets of London one night to raise awareness for youth homelessness. It was a groundbreaking act that cemented his mission to help people experiencing homelessness.
In a sense, the way Prince William and Princess Catherine intend to run the monarchy is undoubtedly what Princess Diana would have wanted for her son.
Like Princess Diana, William wants to connect with people’s everyday lives and break from outdated tradition, something Diana often felt restricted by.
William’s vision for the monarchy, focusing on activism, the dismantling of a rigid, formal approach, and his plan to put family-first before the crown, directly mirrors Princess Diana’s compassion and positivity. His mother would have been proud.
