After planned abdominal surgery, Kate Middleton is happy to be home with Prince William and their children, George, Louis, and Charlotte.
King Charles Increased Public Awareness About Prostate Health
Upon having a procedure for his prostate, King Charles is also home with his wife, Queen Camilla. The King and Princess Catherine handled their respective surgeries in entirely different ways.
The King made his health challenges known to the public. He wanted to educate older men to have their prostate checked. Kate did say that she was having abdominal surgery but did not go into detail about it.
When the King came out of the hospital with Camilla, he was seen waving and smiling to the public, who wished him a speedy recovery.
Earlier that day, Kate Middleton left the hospital, but no one saw her make her exit. The contrast is glaring, but the main reason for King Charles being open about his procedure was to inform the public.
The King and Queen and the future King and Queen had very different approaches. The royal family is known for stoically and dutifully keeping their health issues private.
Royals have done this for centuries and even in recent times. The Palace has a particular way of keeping mum about the subject of health.
In 2007, Camilla had a hysterectomy, and the palace issued a statement that it was a “routine scheduled operation, but we wouldn’t disclose any further details of a private medical condition.”
In 2001, Sophie Countess of Wessex was airlifted to King Edward VII Hospital. The Palace said it was an “emergency operation” but did not say why.
Kate Middleton is Keeping Her Health A Private Matter
However, members of the media found out it was an ectopic pregnancy, which is when a fertilized egg implants itself outside the womb. Afterward, Sophie issued a statement.
In 1988, Prince Harry had an operation when he was three. It was for a hernia. The palace was not forthcoming about the surgery until after the procedure.
In 1951, King George VI had a lung operation. Buckingham Palace remained silent about the reason for it. It wasn’t until after his death one year later that everyone found out that he had had lung cancer.
Royals tend to have a quiet dignity concerning health matters. They don’t want to be pitied or made to appear weak. The Palace also wants everything to continue to be “business as usual” regardless of the circumstances.
Not even Kate’s closest advisers were told anything about her stomach surgery. They didn’t even know beforehand that she would have it. The children did not visit her, nor did any of her close family.
The Wales office chooses not to give updates about her health and says that the family wants her medical details to remain private.
Kate Middleton will likely not be seen until after she heals. On the other hand, King Charles wanted to precipitate public awareness, leading to a marked increase in men seeking information about prostate health.
The two contrasting ways of dealing with these issues shed light on the monarchy’s resolve to be strong and diligent no matter what happens.
