Gwyneth Paltrow is opening up about perhaps one of the most difficult times in her life. Even though she’s talked about it with her fans in the past, the Hollywood actress has opened up about the moment she decided that it was time to pull the plug on her marriage to her ex-husband Chris Martin so the two of them could ultimately move on. Here’s what she has to say.
In an essay for Vogue UK, which published this past week, Gwyneth admits that even though they were together for 11 years, she and Chris figured that they “didn’t quite fit together.”

She said, “We were close, though we had never fully settled into being a couple. We just didn’t quite fit together. There was always a bit of unease and unrest. But man, did we love our children.” Gwyneth added that she came to this revelation during a trip to Italy to celebrate her 38th birthday.
“Between the day that I knew and the day we finally relented to the truth, we tried everything,” she wrote. “We did not want to fail. We didn’t want to let anyone down. We desperately didn’t want to hurt our children. We didn’t want to lose our family.”
And while no one really knows what happened between Chris and Gwyneth, the actress says that they managed to split amicably because she owned up to her own mistakes.
“It’s very different for every couple but, for me, it meant, more than anything, being accountable for my own part in the dissolution of the relationship,” she said. “There existed aspects of myself I was trying to heal through this relationship that I wasn’t honest with myself about. I had been blind, guarded, invulnerable, intolerant. I had to admit that and be brave enough to share it.”
