The movie has gone on to become a fan classic after having won ‘Best Original Screenplay’ at the 1998 Oscars. But, for Minnie, things could have been so different had she not been cast.
And given that she had her best acting days ahead of her, the last thing that she expected to hear was that her looks were not enough to get her into the movie. With that being said, Minnie was shaken up at the time. In her comments to The Cut, she said: “It was devastating. To be told at 26 that you’re not sexy…I certainly had insecurities growing up. That I was not gorgeous. I was not super pretty.”
Nevertheless, Minnie was able to overcome those issues for the following reasons. First of all, she had the support of her family who instilled the belief that beauty was subjective. Therefore, just because a certain subset of people may not have viewed her that way, this was not representative of everybody. That is why Minnie did not resort to taking any drastic steps. She added: “I thank God that I didn’t do a ton of stuff that I could have then gone and done. It could have been way more damaging than it was.”
Secondly, in any event, the film’s two other actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon also played an integral part. Minnie expanded on how they managed to convince everybody else that she was suited for the role. And that is something that she will never forget. Her following comments confirmed as much: “I am grateful to them until this day.”
