As recently reported by Deadline.com, it looks like some of the top star in Hollywood have proposed to pay more to end the strike and they shared their plan with the SAG-AFTRA guild.
The meeting happened this past Tuesday (October 17) via Zoom as they tried to find a way to end the actors’ strike that’s nearing 100 days.
George Clooney and Other Top Stars Offer to Pay the Union to End the Strike
The plan at its roots would have the biggest earners saving the AMPTP signatories by removing the $1 million cap on membership dues. This would allow the top earners to pay more to help cover health benefits among other areas the guild is trying to firm up.
According to Deadline, the group of stars presenting this idea are Ben Affleck, Emma Stone, George Clooney, Tyler Perry, and Scarlett Johansson, and they met with guild leaders about their proposal.
A generous offer goes nowhere
Clooney talked to Deadline about it and he laid out their plan:
“A lot of the top earners want to be part of the solution. We’ve offered to remove the cap on dues, which would bring over $50 million to the union annually. Well over $150 million over the next three years. We think it’s fair for us to pay more into the union. We also are suggesting a bottom-up residual structure — meaning the top of the call sheet would be the last to collect residuals, not the first. These negotiations will be ongoing, but we wanted to show that we’re all in this together and find ways to help close the gap on actors getting paid.”
This could be interesting if the guild accepts it, especially given how their leadership added in a $1 increase per subscriber after a deal was agreed upon that caused the studios to walk out of the talks.
It’s good to see people at the top actually show concern and want to help those further down the food chain. That’s not something we see very often in these negotiations, especially when they’re often the ones that suffer so a business can honor the demands of the unions.
Someone always loses in these instances, and while we applaud Clooney and the others for trying to make things right and get everyone back to work, we’re curious if others will join in or if this will become a civil war within SAG-AFTRA and the actors.
As Clooney said, things are still in negotiations and they can change as a result. Given how things have been handled so far and how most money going to the guilds tend to stay with the guilds, it’ll be interesting to see how it goes.
Of course, it’s come out that the offer won’t affect the negotiations, which the studios gave the guild everything for the actors they wanted but not the raising subscription fees to go to the guild itself.
