‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Steve Burton Thanks Maurice Benard
‘General Hospital’ spoilers indicate that Sonny is to thank for Jason’s prominence on GH. When Steve Burton started playing Jason Quatermaine back in 1991, he wasn’t really that gung-ho about the part. Steve Burton said that one person pushed him and took him in as a son in a way and helped him with the role. That man was Maurice Benard, or Sonny Corinthos, as most GH fans know him by. But at first things weren’t so rosy between the the two as Steve and Maurice did not really interact too much at first.

Steve, in an interview with ABC Soaps In Depth, mentions that they would see each other and not talk, just acknowledge one another. Steve was pondering leaving the show and say goodbye to Jason Quartermaine and Port Charles. Then out of nowhere one day Maurice told Steve he did a great job in a scene. Benard asked Burton if he could help him with some acting techniques Then the rest is history.
“This was when I was still playing Jason Quartermaine,” said Steve about the time period when he was considering quitting GH, “so I’d go to his house, and we’d rehearse and rehearse, and he’d teach me. I spent a lot of time with him and his family. I didn’t really have a teacher before, and it was like I was in acting class all the time.” he added. “I don’t know whether that was the trigger or not,” Steve continues, “but he is a huge mentor of mine and taught me a lot. It was just amazing. It changed my career, acting wise.”

The two of them started hanging out more often. Burton was always at Maurice’s home and they would work on the scenes for hours at a time. Maurice taught Steve about acting and certain techniques as well. Steve had never gone to any acting lessons, so Maurice helped him tremendously and their amazing friendship developed. They remain very close friends to this day.
Steve said that he has learned so much from Maurice and the friendship they have is priceless. Steve Burton says that Maurice Benard has taught him valuable life lessons and been a great friend throughout the whole time he’s been on General Hospital as well.
“If you can’t be honest with yourself in life, you will never grow as a person. I found that to be true. Whether we like the truth or not, if you can be honest with yourself, you can grow as a person and an actor. And number two is, if it’s not there, never force it. No matter what you think a scene should be or what place you think you should be at as an actor, if it’s not there, do not force it. I still follow both of those suggestions today.”
