Maurice Benard’s State of Mind once again brought the deep conversation and the great moments. This time, he invited his daughter, Heather to join the conversation again. The last time she was on, she was pregnant and actually had the baby not long after appearing on the show. So, a lot had obviously changed since the last time and he wanted to talk about it. Let’s see some highlights from the chat.

Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on pregnancy

The actor mentioned he loves Maurice Benard’s State of Mind because he gets to ask all kinds of things he’s wanted to know. And one thing he wanted to know was what it was like to have the baby. Heather described the mixed emotions involved, and also talked about having medication to take away the pain.

Heather said the whole experience was like saying goodbye to herself, but she also has this huge memory gap. She can’t remember how she felt or what she was thinking after she had the baby.

The mixed feelings have apparently continued after the birth, as she talked about having these moments where you’re a bit upset because you’re up at three in the morning, but also having more love than anything for the child.

The conversation got deep when she talked about being born on drugs. He wanted to know what she saw as a child that made her think drugs were wrong while others in the family took that path. She responded that she remembers thinking that she’s a child, but she felt she could do things better.

Heather described being alone often and how it gave her time to reflect and think, but it does affect her to this day. For example, if someone tells her to be on time more than once, it gives her a lot of anxiety.

Despite growing up with people who have been involved in drugs, she didn’t really learn about them until she was in school and started seeing the anti-drug videos. She attributes some of that to possible memory gaps based in trauma.

Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on relationships and family

The chat than turned to relationships and the one really bad one Heather was in. They would tell her the guy was bad news, but she wouldn’t listen. He was curious to get insight into why that happens. Heather responded it’s stubbornness.

She attributed some of it to also having taken care of herself a lot as a child, so she thought she knew best. Also, she said it’s a loyalty thing once you get into a relationship with someone, as well as a little bit of naivete because she hadn’t really been there before.

He then wanted to talk about them adopting Heather and what a beautiful and important moment it was. He said he’ll never forget when they signed the papers. Heather had looked at Paula and asked, “Can I call you mom?” Benard had to turn his head, because it was such an emotional moment.

Heather said she and Benard’s other daughter would actually talk about how they were going to be sisters one day, which we found to be interesting and moving. This is definitely a can’t-miss part of the conversation.

Maurice Benard’s State of Mind on the Pandemic

Finally, the chat also turned to the pandemic and the mental issues he experienced during that time, which you knew was coming. After all, Maurice Benard’s State of Mind is all about mental health. He started the conversation be saying it was basically the first time he was stuck at home and been around them so much. So, it was the first time he couldn’t somewhat hide what he was dealing with. Heather described him as “weird”, which Benard wanted her to define.

That “weird” was how he was distant, and that he usually has a Zen about him that just wasn’t there. She also said there was no light in his eyes and he looked tired.  The interesting thing for us was, as they were talking about the hard times then and how he didn’t even want to play games, they also managed to laugh and joke about the situation. We love that, as humor is sometimes the best coping mechanism when you’re dealing with a trauma or challenge.

It shows when you can do that after the fact that there’s a healing that took place and you can look at it from a lighter perspective. Check out the video to see what else they said about this, his anxiety and the timing, as well as some advice looking back on it. You’ll also get to meet a special extra guest at the end.
