In California, the man with the big cheese just happens to be Governor Gavin Newsom, and not Mickey Mouse, as was previously assumed. It has just been announced that Disneyland in Southern California will reopen its parks on April 30th.

Newsom has kept California’s theme parks shut down for well over a year because of the ongoing pandemic, despite the fact that the parks in Florida have been open since last summer without an outbreak of the coronavirus. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, the parks had been closed for more than a year due to Covid-19, resulting in thousands of employee furloughs and a major shift in Disney’s strategy. Thankfully, Disney has said that more than 10,000 cast members would be returning to work.

“You’ll soon be welcomed back to enjoy unforgettable attractions, see beloved Disney friends, shop for the latest merchandise, savor the world-famous food and drinks, capture fun photos and cherish special magical moments,” a statement reads on the official Disney Parks Blog site.

Earlier this month, after California health officials said certain outdoor activities could resume with restrictions as early as April 1, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek it’s time to open Disney’s doors again.

“We’re ready to make magic all over again,” Chapek said to the press. “We’re certainly going to be operating with capacity constraints, but at the same time it’s going to be that Disney experience that everyone has come to expect.”

In addition, the previously furloughed employees will be retrained to be able to operate according to California’s new requirements. But here’s the catch: the limited reopening would not include indoor rides and the theme parks will only be open to California residents.
