Even though all of the other Disney theme parks from around the world have been open for months now, including the parks in Shanghai, China, and Orlando, Florida, Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. still has its doors completely shut.

That’s why Disney, along with Universal Studios, is calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to reopen California’s theme parks after everything closed down back in mid-March because of the ongoing global pandemic that has been the coronavirus. Here’s what you need to know.

According to The Orange County Register, the Sacramento-based California Attractions and Parks Association wants Disney and Universal to re-open its doors. The group also represents Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, SeaWorld SanDiego, Legoland California, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and California’s Great America.

“California’s amusement parks urge the governor to issue amusement park guidelines expeditiously so these vital community attractions can reopen their doors in a responsible manner and get residents back to work,” California Attractions and Parks Association executive director Erin Guerrero said in a statement.

As many fans know, both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure closed on March 14th, during the same time that the coronavirus pandemic was making major headlines. Governor Newsom has said that he will only give the greenlight for the parks to open once it is safe to do so.

“Once we have a clearer understanding of when theme parks can reopen from the State of California, we will be able to work with the state and Orange County Health Care Agency towards a reopening date,” according to Disney officials.

It’s been noted that “tens and thousands of jobs” are in jeopardy and that local businesses that rely on these amusement parks are struggling to stay open. Disneyland was supposed to open back on July 17, but that date has been indefinitely postponed.
