Fettes College, where former British prime minister Tony Blair studied, has paid £450,000 to a victim of sexual abuse.

The man was awarded damages in the Edinburgh private school historic abuse case, reportedly the largest amount ever paid to a victim. A teacher abused the victim, who has finally gotten some redress now that he is in his 50s.

A man known by the pseudonym ‘Edgar’ is being sought for extradition from South Africa after allegations that he sexually assaulted students at the exclusive £40,000-a-year boarding school, as the victim wants further accountability.

In his comments, the victim said: “I have waited a long time for Fettes to recognise the abuse that I suffered at the hands of one of their teachers. Not just in terms of their public apology but also in the payment of damages.”

This is not the first time that something like this has happened at the institution. This year, the institution had already paid out £400,000 to ‘Frank,’ a man who says he was physically and sexually assaulted by ‘Edgar.’

In addition, radio host Nicky Campbell said he was abused at Edinburgh Academy in Scotland in the 1970s which has led to another  investigation. The college in response has vowed to tackle these issues moving forward.

In an official statement on behalf of the college, a representative stated the following: “These accounts to the inquiry, describing the abuse suffered in the 1970s, are now part of the school’s history and we must take this as an opportunity to listen, reflect and learn.”

This is a landmark decision and cases like this will hopefully lead to more people being held to account. The victim has shown a lot of bravery in speaking out and it serves as an example for others who are looking for similar justice. And that is the most important thing.
