According to new reports, the FBI has confirmed that the human remains that were found near a preserve in Florida are those of Gabby Petito’s fiancé, Brian Laundrie. The FBI said dental records confirmed the identification. Here’s what you need to know.

According to reports, local authorities confirmed that the skeletal remains found during the month-long search for Brian Laundrie near the Carlton Reserve were his. “They are human remains, no doubt there. I would say that the remains were consistent with one individual, you know skeletal remains,” North Port Police spokesperson Josh Taylor told the press.

A nationwide manhunt for Brian Laundrie — named a person of interest in the case — began last month. Gabby Petito’s cause of death was strangulation, and the manner of death was homicide. The 22-year-old was reported missing and found dead after she and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie embarked on a country-wide road trip this past summer. However, Laundrie returned home to Florida on September 1st without his girlfriend, and 10 days before her mother reported her missing.

Petito’s body was found on September 19 in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. The coroner said DNA samples were taken by law enforcement.

Steve Bertolino, the attorney representing Laundrie’s family, said Wednesday night that the 23-year-old’s parents were with search crews when the items were found. According to Bertolino, Laundrie’s dad Chris found the bag containing some of his son’s items and offices found the backpack on the other side of the trail.

According to the FBI, the area where the remains and the items belonging to Laundrie were found was underwater until recently. Laundrie was then reported missing by his parents on Sept. 17, two days after he was named a person of interest in Petito’s disappearance. When Laundrie’s parents reported him missing, they told police they had last seen him leave home to go to the Carlton Reserve area for a hike on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
