A member of the Extinction Rebellion organisation broke down in tears after being cautioned that she and six other females may be incarcerated because of the almost £100,000 in damages they caused to Barclay’s headquarters in London.

Extinction Rebellion is a global organisation that promotes non-violent contention to stop the extinction of species and reduce the danger of social disintegration. While that may be the case, the tactics of the organisation appear to be anything but that.

At Southwark Crown Court, Carol Wood was convicted of carrying out a criminal offence when seven activists broke the windows of the Barclays bank’s Canary Wharf workplace in April last year, and she shed tears as a result.

Apart from Cowen, the other six women had all been convicted in the past. It is noted that the women could be given punishments ranging from a community order to a prison sentence of up to 18 months.

The group congregated in front of the Barclays bank and then employed chisels and hammers to shatter the big glass panes. It was told to jurors that the group also affixed leaflets on the windows that stated, ‘If there is a climate emergency, break the glass’.

The women then created a line in the street while members of the press were filming and taking pictures of them. The response on social media was far from sympathetic towards the activists.

A significant proportion of people welcomed this decision, as regardless of what you may think about their views, the fact of the matter is that they resorted to criminal methods and endangered people in the process.

One person wrote: “Throw away the key,” while another person stated: “Lock them all up and order them to pay for the damage they have caused. It’s time we stopped standing by and acting helpless.”

Time will tell how serious the repercussions will be. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you liked reading this article, then check out our other features on the Daily Soap Dish.
