In what was a back and forth for a while, Elon Musk has officially bought Twitter and he hopes that platform will continue to be a digital town square. He explained his reasoning for the enormous $44 billion purchase Thursday saying, “There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right-wing and far left-wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide in our society.”
He has a great point, and these wings have been shifting further and further apart, especially in an online setting. While people actually have more in common than they realize, online, there are teams, and it feels like you have to pick one and go all the way in.
Elon Musk Is Officially The New Owner Of Twitter, Says He “Didn’t Do It To Make Money”
Musk continued to say that, “In the relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional media has fueled and catered to those polarized extremes, as they believe that is what brings in the money, but, in doing so, the opportunity for dialogue is lost.”
He didn’t buy Twitter to make money, or because it was easy but because he wanted to “help humanity”. Elon refers to himself as the “Chief Twit” in his Twitter bio, which also mentions his new acquisition. Additionally, this week there was a video that went around showing the man walking around the headquarters carrying moving boxes.
What Elon might try to change at Twitter now that he is in charge has been the subject of much discussion. You may recall that he complained about the platform’s strict restrictions on free speech at the beginning of this, and all indications are that he is now relaxing the standards for what is appropriate to tweet.
Good. Let people speak openly and freely. Sure, feelings will be hurt and people will get offended, but that is a part of life. As long as there are no open calls to violence, words are just words.
