Dave Chappelle’s close friend Donnell Rawlings has defended the comedian following the criticism that has emerged in response to his Netflix show entitled ‘The Closer.’

Donnell Rawlings Defends His Close Friend Dave Chappelle Following His Netflix Controversy

Dave, for his part, had been accused of mocking the LGBTQ community through his jokes. This led to suggestions that he was being transphobic to the extent that Netflix employees staged a walkout protest to demand that the network remove his show.

In response, Donnell feels that the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. He went on to state how a large proportion of people have totally misunderstood the message of the show.

Thus, what is more important is the fact that people should be allowed to express themselves. In an interview with TMZ, he said: “I don’t think these people are standing by his side.

“I think they are standing beside freedom of speech… and protecting art.” In this way, any defence of Dave does not equate to an endorsement of his views. After all, by virtue of being a comedian, people should have freedom of thought.

As such, rather than creating division by censoring everyone, there would be a greater benefit if people got involved in some discourse.

He added: “One thing I can say about the Closer, it’s creating a dialogue with people, for the most part, never have a conversation with each other.”

A prime example of this was Dave’s friendship with the late transgender comedian Daphne Dorman. Donnell spoke on how Dave reached out to her at a time when people were not supporting her.

Therefore, this has been overlooked in light of a short-term saga with all of Dave’s work with the LGBTQ community being disregarded.

He continued: “[Dave Chappelle] had a human connection with and was trying to understand [her]… And you ignore the biggest story of that special.”

Dave certainly has a lot of support out there, which is the reason why the show has continued to go on despite the controversy. Regardless of whether you agree with Dave or not, he should be commended for continuing to stick by what he believes in.
