‘Days Of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers share that Paul Telfer, who plays Xander Kiriakis on Days, was recently interviewed by Soap Opera Digest, and he dished on the very soapy and dramatic but incredibly heartbreaking showdown between Xander and Sarah Kiriakis (Linsey Godfrey).
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Xander And Sarah “Could Have Had It All”
This past week, viewers felt like they were watching a private confrontation between a husband and wife whose marriage is sadly crumbling as Telfer and Godfrey’s Xander and Sarah both “played it to the beat” as Adele sang.
Xander and Sarah could have had it all. With a rich history, sizzling chemistry, a bond that couldn’t be broken, and an adorable young daughter to boot, the couple was looking forward to adding to their family and giving little Victoria a sibling.
Sadly, their plans were derailed as Sarah lied to her husband for months as she knew Xander’s brother, Phillip Kiriakis (John Paul Lavoisier), forged a letter from their late father, Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston), and tried to steal the company Victor left in Xander’s care after his death.
However, a judge ruled that in light of “Victor’s letter,” the two brothers would need to share Titan in a 50/50 split. Neither one of them liked the arrangement at first, but as time went on, they learned to work together and bond as brothers.
They even managed to take over DiMera and kick Kristen DiMera (Stacey Haiduk) to the curb. It was a team effort, and they finally came together for the good of the family. Or so Xander thought.
Xander found out about Phillip’s betrayal and decided to beat him to death, which was not only brutal to watch, but it was foolish on Xander’s part since the bruises on his knuckles were a dead giveaway he’d tried to kill his brother.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Xander Gaslights Sarah To Get To The Truth
When Xander learned of Sarah’s role in keeping the forgery a secret from him, the two of them clashed. Xander gaslit Sarah in a sense as he started to put the pieces together.
Telfer explained,
“Yes, it was gaslighting, but I don’t think it was for the typical reason. Usually, Xander gaslit someone specifically to drive them crazy or get them to do something. With this, Xander was just trying to feel around the edges of this possible awful thing Sarah’s done and could not bring himself to just outright accuse her.”
He continued,
“So he just started to behave as if this hypothetical thing had, in fact, already happened and talked as if he knew something that he didn’t know. And that’s what forced Sarah to fill in those gaps.”
Telfer compared Xander’s probing and denial to a cat-and-mouse game. The showdown that ensued provided deep insight into Xander’s psyche, and Telfer made Xander equally vulnerable and terrifying.
Sarah, who was the doctor who treated Phillip after he was beaten within an inch of his life, saw how much damage Xander did, and deep down, she knew he was violent and capable of that.
The actor admitted part of this was Sarah’s faulty belief that she could protect her marriage and her daughter from Xander’s “potential outbursts.” It’s similar to why she didn’t tell him Victoria belonged to him at first.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Telfer Says Xander Feels The Terror Of Loss
Telfer went on to explain Xander’s feelings about Sarah’s betrayal,
“Now there’s not just the rage and the anger at the betrayal, but there’s also this terror of loss. It’s like, ‘Wait a minute, nothing’s changed. You still don’t trust me. You still think I’m a danger to our daughter.’
“Sarah and Xander have been together for all this time, and it’s been, from his perspective, wonderful. So, it’s not just the anger, but it’s the awfulness of potentially losing all of that,” the actor said.
Now, Xander is wondering if he’s honest and she’s not; how can he be with her? However, Telfer acknowledges that Sarah wasn’t necessarily wrong in what she did.
“Her motivations made total sense if you look at them on paper and look at Xander’s behavior over the years. It’s super heart-wrenching the way it plays out.”
He concluded,
“It’s like the whole world is crumbling around them. The ground is literally disintegrating beneath their feet, and it’s just awful.”
