Dave Chappelle turned down the opportunity to have his former high school ‘Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C,’ name their theatre after him.
Dave Chappelle Turns Down Chance To Have His Former High School’s Theatre Named After Him
The comedian was accused of making jokes that were deemed to be transphobic as part of his Netflix show entitled ‘The Closer.’ That resulted in a significant amount of backlash, some of which played out at his high school when he made a visit to the place in November last year.
During the course of that process, one student was alleged to have confronted Dave by stating the following: “I’m 16 and I think you’re childish, you handled it like a child,” to which Dave replied: “My friend, with all due respect, I don’t believe you could make one of the decisions I have to make on a given day.”
This fallout was on the back end of the students reportedly demanding that the school not name their theatre after him. But after that stand off, it seemed Dave had come out on top. In the picture here, we can see that an event was scheduled to take place on Monday, 20th June 2022.
It was titled with the following words: “Dave Chappelle Theatre.” A significant proportion of fans praised Dave for continuing to defend his comedy in spite of the criticism that had emerged.
And in the process of doing so, they felt he deserved the accolade that he was getting. One person wrote: “Man Dave Chappelle dgaf bout none of that…keep on doin what he gon do and live stop being lame Jerrod whoever you is.”
However, the comedian shocked fans when he decided to turn down the accolade. Instead, Dave chose to call it the “Theatre for Artistic Freedom and Expression.”
Irrespective of the decision, it is safe to say that Dave has managed to come out on top. And it may encourage other comedians to stand their ground in the face of controversy. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
