After carrying out several shootings in Memphis on Wednesday night, including some that he allegedly live-streamed on Facebook, a disturbed gunman was apprehended, according to police.

Authorities and numerous reports claim that Ezekiel Kelly, 19, who has a violent criminal history, terrorized the city for hours and led police on a wild chase before being captured at around 9:30 p.m. No charges have been made public against him.

Around 4:35 p.m., a man was shot and killed at a gas station on East Parkway; a minute later, a woman was shot and seriously hurt on Norris Road close to I-240, according to News3. As Kelly continued his violent rampage, locals were told to stay inside if they didn’t need to be outside, public bus service was suspended, and two universities were put on high alert.

In the end, Kelly was detained in Memphis’ Whitehaven neighborhood, which is about 11 miles from Rhodes College and 12 miles from the University of Memphis. Kelly changed from a blue Infiniti sedan to a grey Toyota SUV during the police pursuit on Wednesday night, according to the police. He allegedly shot the female driver of the SUV after carjacking it.

A man who resembles Kelly can be seen entering an AutoZone store after getting out of his car and taking a few steps inside in a screen capture of the Facebook livestream that was widely circulated on social media. He then pulls out a gun and fires twice at the man inside the store. He yells at the camera, “no faking, this sh- for real,” as he approaches the store’s front door.

According to available information, Kelly was detained in June 2020 on suspicion of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and attempted first-degree murder. He received a three-year sentence, but the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported that he was released on March 16.
