A judiciary in New Zealand have today taken provisional guardianship of a sick infant whose parents refused to permit vital cardiac surgery due to worries that the blood for the procedure could be from people immunised against the coronavirus.
Courts Deny Parents Custody Of Their Kid After They Refused To Accept Blood From Vaccinated Donors For Baby’s Heart Procedure
The courts ordered that the four-month-old infant be put under restricted guardianship – allowing for a critical medical procedure to be administered in order to address a heart defect called pulmonary valve stenosis.
The infant’s mom and dad refused to have the process done because any blood that would be given could have been from a recipient who had been administered a covid vaccine.
However, Justice Ian Gault accepted the sworn statements from healthcare professionals which noted that since the introduction of the coronavirus vaccines, numerous blood transfusions have taken place worldwide, and the shots have not been associated with any known detrimental effects.
Naturally, this generated a lot of controversy for the following reasons. First of all, regardless of what you think about the covid vaccine, the fact of the matter is that the parents had been prevented from doing something which they wanted to do in the best interests of their child.
Secondly, there is a worry that government intervention such as this could include into other areas of people’s personal lives. Lastly, in any event, there has been a significant amount of backlash to this decision with people calling for it to be reversed.
Liz Gunn, a campaigner, had this to say: “Jacinda [Prime Minister of New Zealand], this is at your feet. Beg them to show some humanity in this country, which we were once so proud of and of which I am now so ashamed.”
The social media response was one of mass condemnation. A significant proportion of people felt that this had breached people’s inalienable rights. One person wrote: “Peak tyranny. Can New Zealanders apply for asylum in the UK now?”
