Does this mean she won’t be appearing on Chris Cuomo’s show anytime soon? Chicago’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot has gone on the record to defend her decision to grant interviews to only Black and Brown journalists.

Needless to say, the move has infuriated the City Hall press corps, but she says that she has a good reason behind it. Here’s what you need to know.

According to WGN News, Lightfoot said that she made the decision to only grant interviews to journalists of color to make the second anniversary of her swearing in.

I’m thinking in this one day when we are looking at the two-year anniversary of my inauguration, as a woman of color, as a lesbian, it’s important to me that diversity is put front in center,” Lightfoot said.

She has also slammed the “overwhelming whiteness” of the Chicago press in a letter that has drawn some sharp criticism on both sides of the aisle. She says that her decision to temporarily only speak to journalists of color was part of her lifelong battle to fight for diversity, both in her personal and her professional lives.

“In looking at the absence of diversity across the City Hall press corps and other newsrooms, sadly it does not appear that many of the media institutions in Chicago have caught on and truly have not embraced this moment,” she wrote.

“I have been struck since my first day on the campaign trail back in 2018 by the overwhelming whiteness and maleness of Chicago media outlets, editorial boards, the political press corps, and yes, the City Hall press corps specifically.”

Gregory Pratt, a reporter for the Chicago Tribute, had his interview request granted, but says that politicians like Mayor Lightfoot don’t get to pick and choose who gets to cover them. He wrote on Twitter, “I am a Latino reporter for the @chicagotribune whose interview request was granted for today. However, I asked the mayor’s office to lift its condition on others and when they said no, we respectfully canceled. Politicians don’t get to choose who covers them.”
