The Golden Globe awards have been a staple of awards season for a long time. According to a CNN article discussing ratings for this year’s broadcast, NBC has been airing the show since the 1990s. However, the show will not go on in 2022, and it’s not the fault of you-know-what. Let’s take a look.
The Golden Globe awards in trouble
First, it’s no secret that Awards shows and sports programming in general has been suffering ever since a certain illness came along and led to a Hollywood shut down, as well as a general shutdown of the public that Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos, General Hospital) has talked about a bit, as it relates to the mental health impact on people.
One would think that any original programming would be thriving in a time when most people were stuck in their homes for the better part of a year. You’d be wrong.
For example, the Golden Globe Awards took a huge tumble in 2021. They lost over 60% of their audience in comparison to 2020’s numbers. Which were also a big drop. Other shows like the Academy Awards have seen a similar fate. This week, the Golden Globe Awards suffered another blow.
Goodbye, The Golden Globe awards—for now
In a recent announcement that’s been making the rounds online, NBC is declining to air the event in 2022, while adding that they hope to be in a position to air it again in 2023. Why? The network blamed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and its recent scandals/issues.
One being the have no diversity in their membership. The network said, “Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.”
Others, including Netflix, have recently distanced themselves from the HFPA. And it’s not just over diversity. There are other issues within the organization many feel need to be worked on.
The organization will also be working on opening up their membership to other mediums, such as online outlets, as well as dealing with potential conflict of interest issues. One article referenced the need to refuse freebies that could influence members.
The Golden Globe awards: What we think
So, what’s our take? We think The Golden Globe Awards are definitely being taken off the air because of the reasons NBC said. However, we think there’s a lot more to it.
Such a huge drop in ratings coupled with bad press isn’t a good look. We believe the network wants to take a breather to possibly make fans miss the show. And we wouldn’t be shocked if the show didn’t come back for a longer time, or to see more awards shows take a break.
The ratings just aren’t there. And a lot of the online reaction is negative, as viewers usually complain about too much messaging. It’s clear times are changing, and we’ll see how the HFPA and the awards show genre as a whole can adapt.
