Shocking news hit the world of pageants when the announcement of Chelsie Kryst’s death came. Chelsie was only 30-years old and it was reported on Sunday morning that she jumped from a 60-story building in New York at around 7:15 a.m. She lived in the Orion building and the last time anyone saw her was on the 29th-floor terrace.

Chelsie’s family was devastated to hear about the news and told People Magazine, “In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Chelsie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength.

She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Chelsie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on Extra. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor, and colleague- we know her impact will live on.”

Kryst was an attorney who was crowned Miss North Carolina in 2019 in May. That is when she went on to compete in the Miss USA pageant. She is only one of three Black women to hold this title and it meant so much to her and her family.

She talked about being a Black woman in the contest on Good Morning America. “People will comment on our social media and be like, ‘Why are we talking about your race? You guys are amazing women.’ And I’m like, ‘Yes, we are four amazing women, but there was a time when we literally could not win.'”

Chelsie also appeared on Extra as a host and her friends there wrote a special statement to her, “Our hearts are broken. Chelsie was not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff.”

We are extremely saddened by this loss and we hope that her friends and family can take some time to heal and grieve. If you or anyone you know is thinking about suicide, there are ways to get help. If you need help or someone you know does, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
