Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, celebrates his 80th birthday today, July 18th, without his daughter. Meghan and her father had a falling out right before she married Prince Harry.
Thomas Markle Posed For Paparazzi Photos Before Meghan And Harry’s Wedding
Their relationship became strained when Thomas posed for paparazzi photos before the May 2018 wedding.
Thomas also suffered from two heart attacks, which kept him from walking his daughter down the aisle. Instead, Meghan’s father-in-law, Charles, did the honors.
In a heartfelt moment between Charles and Harry, when the Duke of Sussex asked his father to lead Meghan toward the altar, he answered,
“Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs. I’m here to support you.”
Thomas was absent from the nuptials. The retired lighting director has not spoken to Meghan in six years and has also never met Archie or Lilibet.
Thomas, in a recent interview, said,
“I’ve never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I want to hear from, Meghan, won’t be in touch. I would love to meet my grandchildren, but I would be happy with a photograph at this stage.”
He has also never met his son-in-law, but Meghan introduced them during a phone call when the couple first started dating.
Thomas has publicly pleaded with Meghan for a reconciliation, but she’s been unresponsive. An insider claims that Queen Elizabeth felt that Meghan and her father’s public disagreements had the potential to “damage” the royal family.
Meghan isn’t on speaking terms with her family other than her mother, Doria Ragland, and her niece, Ashleigh Hale.
The Once Bonded Pair Couldn’t Be Further Apart
Thomas is an interesting person, as he’s an award-winning lighting director who’s worked with Billy Joel and Aretha Franklin. After school, Meghan would often accompany Thomas on set.
He was also the lighting director for Married With Children and General Hospital. Meghan got her start in acting on the soap, playing Nurse Jill for two episodes.
The once-bonded pair couldn’t be further apart. Thomas claimed that fame has changed Meghan’s personality.
“The person she’s become isn’t the girl I raised,” he said. “She’s been acting entitled. Things escalated after she met Harry.”
Thomas Markle explained that he felt “deep sympathy” for King Charles, who was also estranged from his son, Harry. Charles also doesn’t get to see his grandchildren much.
“I would love to speak to him because I am sure he has as many unanswered questions as I do. Neither of us deserves the treatment we’ve received.”
Not to mention, he can relate to the King’s health concerns because he’s also faced the prospect of death and understand what it’s like to feel burdened by illness.
He also feels sad that Archie and Lilibet don’t get to participate in grand royal family events like Trooping the Color, which took place this past June.
He feels they are close to an age where they may wonder why they don’t get to see members of either side of their family.
“I don’t expect to hear from Meghan and Harry,” he admitted. I wish we could have worked the situation out. I was always ready and willing to do that.”
