It’s no secret that Queen Elizabeth loved animals. She was known for her adoration of her beloved Corgis, and she also had great affection for her horses.
Terry Pendry Cared For the Queen’s Horses
For the first time, her former stud groom, Terry Pendry, has revealed the details of her final pony ride. Pendry took care of the Queen’s horses for more than 28 years and looked after around 100 of her horses at one point in time.
In a touching account, he said that the Queen was so tiny and frail that he needed to help her off the mount, even though she insisted that she climb up on the saddle herself.
Instead of riding by her side as he typically did, her Majesty wanted him to walk beside her in case she fell. She joked that she hadn’t had someone walk beside her like that since she was a Princess. He took a beautiful picture of her on her pony.
“I had an inkling that was probably the last time I was going to see her. When I used to lift her off her pony, she was getting lighter and lighter and frailer and frailer,”
Pendry explained.
She later placed the photograph in her scrapbook with a handwritten note. Pendry talks about the last time he saw the Queen the next day. She brought a bag of carrots to feed Emma.
He explained how she was not above a good joke, even on those last days.
“She just looked at me and said, you were very rude to me yesterday.”
He replied,
“Your Majesty, I’m awfully sorry, but what do you mean? If I was, I apologize profusely. It wouldn’t have been intentional, and I apologize. Was it something I said?” “Yes,”
she said.
“It was. You said my age,”
And then she burst out laughing.
Emma Was Most Treasured Horse And Riding Companion Of Queen Elizabeth
Pendry explained that he felt the Queen had a sense of quiet reflection about her that day. It was almost as if she knew that would be the last time she would see Emma.
In her final years, he had to put another step on the mounting block, and Pendry used to have to lift her off it. He recalls his memories of the Queen quite fondly.
He remembers seeing the monarch with her children and grandchildren and how kind and loving she was. He loved watching her with her family.
“Her grandchildren just doted on her,”
He said.
“Her own children, it was just magical to watch it.”
Even though her health waned during her final years, Pendry said that he convinced the Queen that exercise and fresh air would benefit her, and he would take her pony to Frogmore Gardens, near Windsor Castle, for a ride.
When the Queen turned 80, Pentry got her to switch to riding ponies instead of her taller horses. Emma became her most treasured horse toward the end. She was her favorite riding companion.
The Queen had been planning to go to Balmoral to spend time with her family. She invited Pendry, but he declined. Queen Elizabeth passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 8th, 2022. He hasn’t forgotten her spirit, wicked sense of humor, love of horses and all animals.
