No one would have ever thought that we would get this far, yet here we are. For some reason or another, Hollywood star Ben Affleck and his actress girlfriend Ana de Armas have been receiving a lot of attention during the coronavirus lockdown. And it’s not because of their movies, their interviews, or interesting things they have to say on social media. Instead, it’s for their rather “mundane” task of walking their dogs or getting their daily coffee to go while the paparazzi captures their outings near Affleck’s home. Strangely enough, the online tabloid world finds this rather fascinating. Here’s why.
Even though both Ben and Ana have nothing to promote, they are two Hollywood celebrities that have received the most attention through the online press and tabloid blogs ever since the coronavirus pandemic started. Whether it’s seeing them get tangled in their dog’s leashes, kissing through their masks, or trying to figure out why there was a life-sized cutout board of Ana on the front lawn of Ben’s house, fans find them strangely fascinating, if not also for the most mundane reasons, too.

The Washington Post puts it this way, “As much as the mild obsession with them is understandable — two attractive, famous people in a relationship will always make news — the BenAna fascination is also startling. Even with a lack of celebrity content as most of Hollywood is still shut down, they don’t do anything that interesting except sometimes get tangled in their dogs’ leashes. And yet, they remain oddly riveting in a way that other stars in this time simply do not. Though Affleck and de Armas’s publicists did not respond to requests for comment about why the pair has become a phenomenon, others believe that seeing photos of BenAna’s daily mundane activities has provided an unexpected source of comfort in an unsettling time.”
Now, as other Hollywood celebrities start coming out of lockdown it will be interesting to see if Ben and Ana will continue to be the paparazzi’s number one target when it comes to boring walks with their dogs and daily strolls to the neighborhood café for their iced latte. Either way, a lot of fans would at this point agree that being a quarantine celebrity has been one of Ben Affleck’s biggest roles to date.
