Soap Operas are a long-standing part of pop culture that are passed down through generations. Once a rich landscape of shows in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the world has definitely dwindled. Today, only four soap operas remain on TV. But, is that about to change? Let’s talk about a couple of projects in the works.
Soap Operas go Prime Time
There’s definitely interest, it seems. Not long ago, The Story of Soaps aired in Prime Time. They went over the history of Soap Operas, as well as how the nighttime dramas evolved from them.
Shows like Dynasty, Melrose Place, and more caught viewers’ attention and kept them coming back for all the crazy twists. And fights that inevitably end with someone getting wet. If you know, you know.
With a revival of Dynasty out there, we’ve already been on the path to renewing this genre. But a couple of newer developments are making this a clear trend, and we hope it sticks.
Classic Soap Operas coming back?
While One Life to Live is still a question mark, there’s been talk for quite a while that it could come back at some point. But the more likely candidate would be it’s fellow ABC show, All My Children.
The series is said to make a comeback in Prime Time, with a couple of the stars taking an active role in the creation of the show. Pine Valley hasn’t had a lot of news out lately, but what is out there says the show is definitely still on the table and some AMC stars talked about it recently.
Susan Lucci, a legend of Soap Operas for her portrayal of Erica Kane on the show, visited The Locher Room recently. She appeared alongside her TV daughters, Alicia Minshew (Kendall Hart) and Eden Riegel (Bianca Montgomery).
The trio seemed excited for the show’s return and Lucci pointed out that with the original creator’s son involved, the show is in good hands. But there’s more on the way.
Spoofing Soap Operas
The latest in the revived Soap Operas is more of a spoof of them. A show called Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, premiered back in 1976.
The show was a spoof of Soap Operas and featured a ton of famous faces we remember from other classic TV shows. It didn’t last long, but it did spawn a few spin-offs and the plot description is enough to make us want to get the DVD.
Recently, it was announced actress Emily Hampshire will be leading the cast of a revival as well as writing. A Showbiz411 report is skeptical of the project, and we can’t exactly argue. A lot of revivals come and go without doing justice to the original.
However, the idea this project is being developed is, in our opinion, a good sign for the future of the genre. We hope it and Pine Valley go on to success and usher in a new wave of daytime and primetime dramas.
