‘Counting On’ Spoilers: Josh Duggar Attempting to Delay Child Pornography Sentencing…One More Hail Mary?

Disgraced reality star and ‘devout’ independent Baptist, Josh Duggar is keeping true to form as he attempts to delay his sentencing in his child pornography case.

The 34 year old faces up to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of possessing and receiving child pornography in early December at the conclusion of an almost two-week trial. His sentencing is set for April 5 but now his team is asking for a 30 day extension.

As Duggar remains behind bars in Arkansas’ Washington County Jail, currently in solitary confinement away from other prisoners for his safety, his legal team has cited difficulties with Covid restrictions for the need for an extra month of preparation time.

Because of certain reasonable Covid-19 precautions understandably instituted at the jail at which Duggar is being detained, it has been more difficult scheduling meetings with Duggar than during more ordinary times,” court papers read.

Duggar’s defense team is asserting they’d use the additional time to “provide additional time to pursue additional information and documentation.”

While the lawyers have insisted their request is “not intended to unnecessarily delay or hinder the proceedings,” it’s far from the first time requests for extra time, or even an acquittal of the jury’s guilty verdict and dismissal of charges have been made by the defense.

Even if the attorneys are granted the extension, it looks like a lost cause to the casual viewer. Residing judge, Judge Brooks will decide on the length of Duggar’s sentence using a very specific formular that factors in criminal history, age of victims involved in the child sexual abuse material and more. Considering the youngest child being sexually abused in the files kept on Duggar’s computer was 3 months old, it seems the book will be thrown at him.

One thing going Duggar’s way is that he will live out his sentences concurrently, not consecutively so will be locked up for 20 years maximum all up.

The judge is yet to respond to the continuance request.
