Netflix’s Dracula released on the first day of 2020 and has quickly become one of the most talked-about shows. Claes Bang stars as Dracula and brings everything to the character. Charisma, fear, confidence, and terror. The show is split into three parts. Each episode spans about an hour and a half and doesn’t take any short cuts. It’s not afraid to show the darkness and taboo subjects. From sexual intercourse to gore, to the most uncomfortable scenes, Dracula doesn’t hold back.
This is what makes the series to shocking and great to watch. Though at times, it may be tough. Between the story, based on Bram Stoker’s original novel and Bang’s performance it exceeds everything I expected. To be honest, we didn’t know what to expect either. With the recent iterations of the character being somewhat lackluster it was hard to imagine this being any good. Thankfully, in this kind of throwback style series, they are able to capture the character and bring him to “life”.
Netflix’s ‘Dracula’ Brought To The Real World – Behind The Scenes Of Practical Effects
One of the main reasons Dracula hits us so visually is the practical effects. So many times today people get way too invested in creating a huge CGI film or series, that they forget about the stories and characters. Plus, CGI is an odd beast. While it can create enormous universes and terrifying beasts, there’s always the factor that we as humans can tell it’s not real. Though it gets better with every passing year, CGI still appears to float on a screen and take us out of it. Not always, but most of the time.
This is why Dracula is so visceral to us. It looks and feels real because it is real. Taking practical effects, fake blood, fake wolves, prosthetics and creating Dracula makes it feel like Dracula. It’s the cherry on top to a perfect novel and story, and why I think the Netflix series is doing so well. It makes people not just watch it but feel it. I makes the hairs on our arm stand up and our spine tingle. It makes us go “bleh”.

You shouldn’t just take my word for it, though I am right. In Netflix’s video, “Bringing Dracula to life,” you can hear all about how they achieved the look and feel of the series. From an actual set built for Dracula’s Castle to the animatronic wolf, we see in the first episode outside the convent. This is a video that has Tom Savini nodding his head and clapping.
