Blockbuster and Redbox Wryly Mock Netflix Opening Physical Stores to Focus on their Original IPs

It looks like things have come full circle for the streaming giant Netflix as they’re now planning to open brick and mortar stores for their members and customers.

The news came curtesy of Screenrant as they dove more into what Netflix is planning.

As many of us remember, Netflix started out during a time where stores like Blockbuster and Redbox reigned supreme with their VHS and DVD rentals.

With Blockbuster, for instance, we’d go there to rent some movies, maybe buy a couple, buy some popcorn, candy, and drinks like in a theater, and head home to enjoy.

It was a fun family experience that was pretty close to the theater going one except we didn’t have to worry about a loudmouth ruining the movie or sitting in gum. Well, maybe not always. Nothing is perfect, after all.

Netflix burst onto the scene with the premise that we could rent movies online and they’d mail them to us to watch and then mail back when we were done. It was a pretty cool convenience that eventually let to the company becoming the first streaming giant in the world.

Times change

The advent of streaming led to giants like Blockbuster, Redbox, and others to close down and downsize to the point there’s only a handful of them left.

And now Netflix is suffering the same fate as everyone has a streaming service and their choices on promoting message packed material over substance and quality stories have led to them having trouble gaining new subscribers and continuing to grow.

So, it looks like they’re going to revert back to some old ways and open brick and mortar stores that will focus on their original IPs (Intellectual properties) like Stranger Things, Witcher, and so on that have become popular.

While the stores won’t offer physical renting, they’ll have retail, dining, and live entertainment options for those going there.

Sounds interesting, but we feel like we’ve seen this before and Blockbuster and Redbox replied with some great sarcastic tweets on X in response to the news:

Blockbuster: “Oh boy… Should we tell Netflix how this ends?”

Redbox: “i think I’ve seen this film before.”

We’re curious to see how this works out as it’s a nice change of pace and it’d be cool to see an instore experience return in some way.

What do you think about Netflix’s plan? Will it work out or is it doomed to failure? Let us know in the comments below.
