Alec Baldwin ignored a very important rule about gun safety, both on and off a film set. Hollywood safety experts say the actor, who accidentally killed director of photography Haylyna Hutchins on the set of the new film “Rust,” while also injuring director Joel Souza, should have never pointed a gun at another human being. Here’s what you need to know.
“Loaded or unloaded, a weapon never gets pointed at another human being,” Hollywood firearms consultant Bryan Carpenter of Dark Thirty Film Services told The Post.
Alec Baldwin Ignored A Very Important Rule About Gun Safety On The Set Of “Rust”
No one was arrested in the incident, and no charges have been filed, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office but it does remain under investigation at press time.
“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,” a statement from authorities said. “Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”
It’s also been noted that for safety, all live firearms used in TV and film productions are typically aimed at a dummy point, not at equipment, cast or crew. At this point it should be human sense to never aim a gun at a person, regardless if you are on a film set or not.
“You never let the muzzle of a weapon cover something you don’t intend to destroy,” said Carpenter, whose New Orleans-based firm has worked on the sets of scores of TV and film productions. “All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.”
If that weren’t enough, some fans have turned their attention to a tweet posted by Baldwin back in 2017. The tweet was a comment on a police officer shooting a suspect. “I wonder how it must feel to wrongfully kill someone…,” Baldwin wrote at the time. He was referring to Huntington Beach police officer Eric Esparza being caught on video shooting Dillan Tabares, who had punched him and reached for his gun.
“This did not age well,” one Twitter user wrote on the thread of Baldwin’s tweet. Another appeared to jump to Baldwin’s defense, however, writing: “2 completely different situations.”
