Three Georgia men have been found guilty for the felony murder in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery, the man who was jogging in their neighborhood when the defendants confronted him and ended up shooting him last year.
Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and Wiliam Bryan were all convicted of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and criminal attempt to commit a felony, while Travis McMichael also received malice murder. They all now face up to life in prison.
The three men chased Arbery in a pickup after they spotted him in their neighborhood outside Brunswick, Georgia on February 23rd, 2020. Travis McMichael ended up shooting Arbery with a shotgun while Bryan filmed the encounter on his cellphone. They were arrested months later after the video made its way through social media.
Three Georgia Men Found Guilty For The Murder Of Ahmaud Arbery
The video doesn’t show much, as it follows a pickup down a road, to a scene where Arbery already was at with another pickup. The altercation begins out of frame, and when it cuts back we see Arbery reaching out to grab the gun, attempting to stop him.
The defense argued that the men suspected Abery was a burglar and the residents were “on edge”.
A nearby security camera showed Arbery visiting a partially built home several times, though it never showed him taking anything or disturbing it. The last video was recorded the day he was killed. It was minuted before he was chased by Gregory and Travis McMichael and Bryan, who had separate defense teams.
While self-defense was argued, with Travis McMichael’s attorneys saying he only fired after being attacked, the evidence proved otherwise.
Some have tried to draw comparisons between this case and Kyle Rittenhouse’s, though it’s almost impossible. In Rittenhouse’s case, it was proved clearly that he reacted in self-defense and race had nothing to do with it. Whereas these men were trying to “perform a citizen’s arrest”, which was legal at the time, but clearly, they attacked Arbery without provocation, assuming he was a burglar.
Justice has been doing well this week, and we’ve seen the correct verdicts on many cases. It looks like these three will be spending many years behind bars.
